BEAUTIFUL SKIN CARE SECRETS

A great image begins with great skin! Good skincare habits are necessary for Total Skin Wellness! Great beauty begins with a healthy, well taken care of body, your skin will glow and your eyes will sparkle if you take health seriously.

Nutritional Supplements - Vitamins A, C, E and beta carotene are antioxidents that protect your skin from damage of the environment. For healthy skin be sure your supplements contain these oh so important ingredients!

Proper amounts of water keep the skin hydrated from within. Drink at least eight-8oz glasses daily.

You MUST properly maintain your skin on a daily basis to ensure skin is at it's best. Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturize on a schedule. Adopt a regimen and stick with it!

Mixing and matching skin care products is not a good idea. Brand X cleanser with Brand Y moisturizer may not give your skin what it needs. For best results and getting the most for your money, find a brand you love and purchase a set with cleanser, exfoliator, toner and moisturizer together.

Alpha Hydroxy acids are Mother Nature's secret skin care weapon. These products repair the skin for a healthier, more youthful look. A super-exfoliator for dead skin cells, these products bring to the surface younger, fresher looking skin. You receive all the cosmetic benefits of Retin-A without side-effects.

Smoking cigarettes causes the blood vessels in the skin to constrict, reducing oxygen flow and the flow of vital nutrients. Too much alcohol has the same effect. Use in moderation!

Your body and your skin requires a good nights rest to repair itself. Be sure to get the amount you need.

Proper exercise helps the body by improving the flow of nutrients and blood to the skin and face.

90% of the signs we contribute to aging are caused by exposure to the sun! Be sure to wear sun protection everyday, winter or summer.

If you want a tan on your face use sunless tanning products. You may also dust a bronzer on your forehead, nose, chin and collarbone for a sun-kissed glow.

FOR A BEAUTIFUL FOUNDATION

Choosing the right foundation:

If your skin is oily you will want to use an oil-free or water-based foundation. The new wet/dry powder foundations are also an excellent choice.

Normal or combination skin should alter foundation based on how your T-zone is responding. If your T-zone is acting a little shiny try an oil-free or wet/dry foundation. When the T-zone is drier you may consider a more creamy foundation. T-zones change with the seasons in most cases.

Dry skin loves the feel of a rich liquid or cream foundation. Be sure to always moisturize before applying your foundation.

Selecting the right shade:

The back of your hand is usually darker than the skin on your face, so test your foundation on your jawline. This will let you know immediately if you will have a line. The perfect shade is one that disappears on the skin.

Applying your Foundation:

You should always allow time for your moisturizer or alpha-hydroxy acid products to absorb into the skin before applying foundation. My trick for this: apply products then go put on undergarments. You are ready to apply foundation!

Using a sponge provides an even, sheer finish. This is preferable over using your fingers and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Using a powder will set your foundation while absorbing excess oil. This reduces blemishes and gets rid of any lines of demarcation. If your skin is dry, powder lightly.

If you are looking for heavier coverage from your foundation use a cream or oil-based foundation and apply powder more heavily.

TAKE A POWDER

Powder adds a glamorous velvety finish while helping to remove the shine of excess perspiration and oil. Carry a compact to minimize that midday-shine pressing onto the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks.

Choose your powder based on your skin type:

For dry skin you'll want a light-deflecting pressed or loose powder. Dry skin has a tendency to look dry around the eyes. You want a powder that will deflect the light.

Oily skin should opt for double protection in an oil-absorbing, Oil-Free powder. This helps to prevent shine. Powder early and often!

Normal or combination skin should touch up just in the T-zone during the day with loose or pressed powder. This is especially important if the eye area tends to be drier.

BEAUTIFUL BLUSH

Many women shy away from blush, afraid that they will look harsh and over-done. The correct technique will help you avoid that problem!

The right way to blush:

Smile or suck in your cheeks to locate the apples of your cheeks. Begin at the center of the apple and apply blush up to the corner of the eye and the temple. Blush should never go below the bottom of your nose, or any closer in than the iris of your eye. Applying blush high on the face makes your eyes sparkle.

After applying blush, blend with a dry makeup sponge. Use the edge of the sponge like an eraser on the outer edges of the applied blush to buff away any lines of demarcation.

Never apply blush below the cheekbones. This tripe of color only creates an illusion that brings the face down and makes you look older.

When the seasons change, change your blush! Deeper, rich colors for fall and winter, paler tines for spring and summer.

Note for oily skin: Excess oil causes the skin to grab color causing your blush to darken as the day goes on. Avoid this by powdering often, not with blush but with pressed translucent powder.

MUST HAVE MAKEUP TOOLS

Makeup sponges - The tool of choice for even foundation coverage and blending all types of shadows and blushers. A great place to buy these is a Beauty Supply store that is open to the public. Don't leave home without it!

Lash Curler - Creates an instant eye lift. For easier curling, apply air from your blow drier to a metal lash curler before curling lashes. Instant curling iron for lashes. (Careful, not too hot!)

Tweezers - Choose one with a slant edge to grasp hair easily.

Makeup wands, brushes or Q-tips - makeup must-have's.

MAGIC MAKEUP LOCK

Use these three simple steps to help keep makeup looking fresh all day!

1. Apply foundation and blush, then set makeup by brushing on an excessive amount of loose translucent powder.

2. Spritz face with hydrating mist. This helps "lock-in" powder on top of makeup.

3. Brush off excess powder and apply a second, light dusting of powder. Blend Well!

AVOID A COMMON MISTAKE

Messy makeup lines can ruin your look! Blend, blend, blend and blend some more. This is the key to looking great. Worry less about how you apply it and more about how you blend it. Using a dry makeup sponge will help blend away all lines of demarcation on shadow, blush, foundation and powder!

COLOR SAVVY

As an Image Consultant I have seen the dramatic effect wearing the proper colors can have on your image. While doing color analysis people find it really amazing to see these effects as well. 90% of looking your best is simply a choice of wearing the proper colors for your season. Your skin looks younger and healthier, eyes look brighter, teeth look whiter. Have you ever had one of those days when people ask you if you are sick even if you feel great? This could have been the result of wearing the wrong colors!

Makeup colors should be chosen based on your natural hair and skin color, NOT to match the color of your clothes you are wearing.

Here are a few guidelines to go by.

Brunettes look better in deeper, brighter blue-based shades.

Blond hair with skin that tans easily should look for cool, powdered blue-based shades.

A redhead with delicate skin will want to choose makeup with warm, golden tones.

Blond hair with fair, delicate skin that burns easily should opt for clear, bright, warm shades.

HINT: Never assume that brown, earth tones look good on everyone. They don't! There are cool earth tones and warm earth tones. Choose the ones that work best with your natural coloring.

Always use colors in the same color family. When using coral lipstick , go with a coral blush. If you choose a blue-based burgundy lip, use a blush with the same blue base.

FOR YOUR LIPS

Lips are a fashion focus! Plumper, prettier lips are in! Some tricks to achieve this are included here.

Lips deserve the same TLC you give your skin. Some of the newer, longer wearing lip colors actually stain your lips and can dry them out. It's important to exfoliate dead skin and lipstick build-up from your lips everyday.

A Common Lip Mistake:

Liner that is too dark! Match your lip color to the pencil so you won't have a line around your mouth. Always choose a lip liner that matches your lipstick or that is a shade lighter. Never use lip liner that is darker than your lip color.

An old trick! To keep lipstick off your teeth is to apply lipstick, form an O with your mouth. Insert your index finger then slowly pull your finger from your mouth. Excess lipstick clings to your finger, not your teeth.

Pampering your lips helps your lipstick wear longer and prevents lipstick bleed. Lips also look plumper and fuller.

Make your lip color last longer by applying a control creme first, then your lip color. Lip control creme not only prolongs wear, but also prevents color bleeding.

ALWAYS use a lip liner to shape lips. Outline the outer lip, then fill in with lip liner then color. Lipstick will wear, and wear, and wear...You can also wear only liner as a color, filling in the entire lip. Lip color won't end up on that someone special!

OH SO EXPRESSIVE EYES

Your eyes are your most expressive feature. Color can help make the most of them by enhancing depth and definition.

A Common mistake to avoid!

Eyeshadow should not match your eye color or your clothing. It is meant to make your eyes look exciting, but not painted. You want to bring out your natural color in your eyes. If you try matching your shadow to your eyes or clothes it can be distracting. Instead, look at the flecks in your eyes and enhance on of these colors.

Example: If you are blue or green-eyed, try taupe or brown shades. Brown eyes should try pink, purple or brown shades.

MASTERING THE EYE PENCIL

Eye pencils define and enhance your eyes making them look brighter and clearer. For best results always smudge your liner. To avoid that drawn on pencil look, apply eye pencil close to the upper lashes BEFORE you add eyeshadow. Your eyes will still look defined, but the look will be softer and natural.

If you are afraid of using liner, slightly dampen the tip of your eyeshadow wand and use a deeper eyeshadow shade next to your lashes to create a line for your eyes. Remember to blend!

Lining the inside rim of your eyes with a blue-based eye pencil enhances the whites. Use a light touch to avoid raccoon eyes.

If you are afraid to use eyeshadow for fear of looking overdone or unnatural, opt for lighter, neutral taupe shades, which complement almost every eye color regardless of your natural coloring and skin tones.

SECRETS OF THE SHADOWS

Using a good shadow control creme makes for a more professional finish. It also helps shadow stay on longer and prevents creasing, fading, and streaking. Blending is easier too!

Tinted shadow control cremes can be worn alone for a natural, soft look.

The true key to perfect shadow is to blend. Color should fade in intensity from lashes to brow, and blend in lighter shades as you work up. The key is continuous color that helps avoid that stark line under your brow.

Go Back.

LUSCIOUS LASHES

Use an eyelash curler for an instant eye lift! Taking years off your eyes. Lash curling tip: apply heat from your blow dryer to a metal lash curler. Presto! Instant curling iron for lashes. (Careful, not too hot!)

Use a brow control creme to shape a define brows for a more polished look. Apply control creme in an upward, outward stoke. Tinted brow cremes can add fullness to sparse brows.

For additional fullness, apply a sweep of brown eyeshadow in place of a pencil. Remember to use a light touch!

Proper brow tweezing - Invest in one good pair of slant-edge tweezers and tweeze in the direction of hair growth. When your finished dab a little moisturizer to lesson irritation.

Don't over tweeze - As we age, our brows naturally begin to thin.

Go Back.

PREVENTING MAKEUP MELTDOWN

Increased humidity and sizzling temperatures can cause makeup to streak, fade and slip off your face! To prevent makeup from melting try the following tips:

Oily skin has a harder time holding onto foundation, blush and powder. To cut the oil slick, wear oil-free makeup.

Powder, Powder, Powder. Powder helps absorb oil throughout the day and preserves a flawless matte finish.

If oily skin absorbs blush quickly, apply powder first, then sweep on blush. Follow with a second light dusting of translucent powder.

Keep eye shadow from creasing and fading by setting eye shadow with a light dusting of loose powder.

OFFICE TO EVENING GLAMOUR

Don't have time to run home and change? Don't fret! Follow these tips.

Gently wipe off surface makeup with a damp facial tissue or paper towel. Try not to disrupt eye makeup.

Add under eye concealer to not only cover dark circles, but also to clean up smudges and any accumulated mascara from under bottom lashes. Apply concealer with a Q-tip and smudge.

Reapply foundation, powder and blush.

Touchup eyeshadow by applying shadow control creme on top of eyeshadow and blend out. If desired, apply more shadow.

Exchange office earrings for a more glamorous pair.

Change hosiery from opaque to ultra sheer.

Replace business shoes with a pair of dressy pumps.

Energize tired tresses. Turn hair upside down and brush through. Lightly spritz through the hair at the roots with water or hydrating mist. Then, use a hand blow dryer in the ladies room or a blow dryer from home to dry the hair while upside down. When hair is dry brush through and style.

Don't haul your backpack, briefcase or office bag with you on a night out! You'll spoil your entire look. Instead, tuck a tiny elegant bag (just enough for lipstick, comb and money) into your work toe, then switch out for the evening.

Go Back.

LUSTROUS LOCKS

The biggest hair mistake is over-processing. Fried, dyed and on the side hairdos don't cut it. The secret? A great cut and knowing the correct styling products to use. Those two tricks can turn mousy hair into lush and lustrous locks.

A great cut is the key to a successful hair style. Go to the best hair stylist you can afford. Remember, you get what you pay for. As women, we are notorious for spending $100 on a new outfit, but balking at spending money on our hair. But we wear our hair everyday. Compare that to an outfit! Doesn't make sense, does it?

Good color is also very important. One of the great faux pas is over highlighting or frosting blond hair - coloring brunette hair too black or too red. The result in each case - hair that looks unnatural.

Try two different strengths of hair spray to achieve a more natural finish. A lightweight spray helps style your hair. A stiffer spray works wonders for setting hair. For added volume, spritz stiffer spray at the roots of hair. Choose a hair spray that smells good.

Feed your hair! hair and nails are the last organs in the body to receive nourishment from the bloodstream. Taking a daily nutritional supplement can provide needed nutrients to the hair and nails.

Note: The right products make all the difference. Choose quality hair products designed especially for your hair type. Naturally curly or coarse hair - add control with styling gel.

Fine, straight hair - pump it up with mousse.

THE MATURE WOMAN

Consistent skin care is a must! Daily maintenance, sun protection and alpha-hydroxy acid products make for for healthy looking skin! Nutritional supplements too are very important to aging skin.

Mature Makeup:

For the most natural look, use a softer makeup shade as your hair lightens.

Broken blood vessels are a common occurrence in aging skin, creating a ruddy complexion. Use a color corrector to neutralize the redness before applying foundation.

Apply foundation lightly, using a moistened sponge. Over applying foundation can accentuate lines.

Pat a loose transparent powder very lightly over face. Dust away excess powder. Too much powder can emphasize fine lines.

Lightly tinted pink or peach face powders with light-deflecting particles can minimize the appearance of fine lines.

To enhance fading or thinning brows, use two colors of brow pencil. For the most natural look, apply with short strokes, not long lines. Add a brow creme to spruce up brows and hold them in place. Control cremes not only shape brows, they add definition, fullness and depth.

To give eye an instant eye lift use an eyelash curler.

Use soft, muted eyeshadow colors like taupe, gray, and mauve if you wear cooler, blue-toned colors. Opt for peach, brown or khaki if you wear warmer shades.

Avoid bright, frosted colors for your eyes and lips. These shades make eyelids and lips look older and crepey.

Be sure to add two coats of mascara to thicken lashes and define eyes.

Watch what you're doing! Invest in a lighted magnifying mirror to use while applying makeup.

Go Back.

MATURE EYEGLASS CHOICES

Choose a frame without bent bows. The bent bows draw your eye downward, again adding age.

Tinted lenses really ADD AGE. Tint your glasses ONLY if your eyes are extremely light sensitive.
